Jewels of the Byzantine Period
The jewels from the Byzantine period (sixth - eighth century AD) unearthed in East Canopus were scattered throughout the site, like the seals and coins from the same period. Objects of everyday life, sometimes with a strong symbolic connotation, these jewels could also become votive offerings. Some of them have only correspondence with Egyptian jewellery and could have been manufactured in a local workshop. The jewellery from East Canopus is all the more exceptional for being discovered in an archaeological context. Its study has been the subject of a doctoral thesis of 2007 at the University of Oxford: Y. Stolz, Early Byzantine Jewellery and Related Finds from the Underwater Excavations in Abukir Bay in Egypt: their Classification, Production, and Function. DPhil.
